Making apple cider vinegar from scratch is really easy. In fact, you will only need a couple of ingredients — apples and organic sugar cane.
To come up with the most amazing homemade apple cider vinegar, it’s a wonderful idea for you to use different varieties of apples, like gala, granny smith, honey crisp — anything you like.
However, there is no problem if you prefer to stick to just one variety.
Are you fond of making applesauce, apple pie and other goodies out of apples? If you really, really want to save money, you can actually use those apple peels and cores for this homemade apple cider vinegar project!
You may be bothered by what’s said earlier that you will need organic sugar cane other than apples. Isn’t sugar bad for the body? Why does it have to be a part of making apple cider vinegar?
There are a couple of reasons why you should not worry much about its presence:
Organic sugar cane is necessary to feed the bacteria that can turn apples into apple cider vinegar.
Much of it is broken down anyway so your homemade apple cider vinegar won’t be high in sugar content.
Excited to make your very first batch of homemade apple cider vinegar? Here are the steps:
-Thoroughly clean a large jar and a small jar that can easily fit inside the other. Allow them to air dry.
-Fill 3/4 the large jar with roughly chopped up apples. Again, you may also use apple peels and cores.
-In a cup of water, dissolve 1 tablespoon of organic cane sugar. The goal is to have your apples completely submerged in the solution, so you may have to double or triple this depending on how big the jar is.
-Pour the organic cane sugar solution into the large jar. Again, make sure that all the apples are completely submerged in it. Otherwise, mold may form and that’s something you don’t want to happen.
-Fill the small jar with water and cover. Place inside the large jar to help ensure that the apples remain submerged.
-Cover the large jar with a piece of cheesecloth. Secure with a rubber band.
-Place it in a cool and dry place in your kitchen — inside a cabinet in the kitchen is a perfect spot.
-Allow about 3 weeks to pass. Every other day or so, check the jar to make sure that the apples remain submerged in the organic cane sugar solution.
-After 3 weeks, strain and return the liquid portion to the jar. Cover with a piece of cheesecloth and secure with a rubber band.
-Place the jar back in a cool and dry place and let it stay there for about 3 weeks more. Stir every few days.
-After 3 weeks, use a funnel to transfer your homemade apple cider vinegar to a bottle with a cap.(lifehack.org)
